Rebecca Romijn-Stamos’s Aurora may get top billing in John McTiernan’s remake of Rollerball, but there is another sexy siren that is absolutely worth watching too. She’s Kata Dobo, who plays the Red Team’s Katya. Dobo’s model looks and Hungarian-purr of a voice could melt the iceberg that took down the Titanic. And, while Rollerball is about hardened characters in a world of ultra-violence, off screen Dobo has a natural warmth, touch of shyness, and sensuality that could take and break a lot of hearts. PREVUE sat down with the sexy starlet to learn her story and to bring you her take on the making of the high-octane film.

Rollerball takes place in the near future, and we bet you will be seeing a lot more of Dobo in the future, as well!

PREVUE: Tell us about your character, Katya.

DOBO: She’s eastern European. It’s in the future, so its not exactly defined where she is from. In the beginning of the film, it is her first game, so she’s a little lost. She’s on the Red Team, which is a really strong team, and she’s trying to figure out how to fit in. As the film goes on, she follows the lead of her other team members and by the end of the movie she becomes as strong and violent as they are.

PREVUE: What is her personality like?

DOBO: She might be the most feminine, along with Aurora (Rebecca Romijn-Stamos). We have some very strong, almost manly, women characters on the team, including a boxer, a bodybuilder, and a stuntwoman.

PREVUE: Did you have to learn to skate for the film?

DOBO: I went three weeks before shooting to work on the practice track. The guys from Montreal were extreme-skaters and they were really, really good. They taught us how to skate on a track. It was difficult, because it’s not just going straight, but it’s a banked figure-eight track.

PREVUE: How was learning to skate?

DOBO: It was so much fun! I didn’t think I was going to be able to do it, then I discovered that I could do it.

PREVUE: How did you come to be in Rollerball?

DOBO: John McTiernan was looking for some eastern European girls and was told he should take a look at me. He saw my movies from Hungary, and then I had an interview with him.

PREVUE: What is Katya’s relationship to Aurora?

DOBO: They are friends, although because of the nature of the Rollerball world, they don’t really have close relationships. There was one scene of us together, which was cut out of the film to get its PG-13 rating. It took place in the locker room.

PREVUE: Why was it cut?

DOBO: Because it’s in the future, John McTiernan wanted to show that men and women shared the same locker room and nakedness was not awkward. It wasn’t naked, it just was us changing.

PREVUE: Sound like it could sell a lot of extra DVDs. What can you tell us about the cast?

DOBO: I had a lot of scenes with Chris Klein, and Rebecca and I shared the same make-up trailer. Everyone was really so nice. They didn’t act like “stars.” Rebecca and LL Cool J are just fantastic! Chris Klein is just a sweet boy. I really love them all! LL is the funny one. He’s got this big voice that always lets you know he’s on the set. He’s so warm and he just made us laugh and laugh.

PREVUE: Tell us about shooting the film.

DOBO: We shot for four months. We started shooting in August and finished in November. I didn’t really get to see Montreal, although it’s very beautiful. During the week, we were shooting and then I went back to the hotel to sleep, so I would have some energy for the next day. We had those leather suits on us and it was really tough to move. I had a leather corset on and it was under very hot lights and we were skating around. [laughing] We could eat anything!

PREVUE: How was working with Jean Reno, who is Rollerball’s bad guy?

DOBO: I just adore him! He invited a few of us over to his house and I was a little embarrassed to go there. Here I was having lunch with this big French actor, and I’m thinking how he is such a big star. He's so easy going. He was preparing the food and afterwards he was washing the dishes. Sometimes it is easy to think that these big stars don’t even know how to cook, but he’s not like that. He’s so relaxed, and here he was cooking and cleaning for us!

PREVUE: What was John McTiernan’s directing style?

DOBO: He is a genius. He has this image in his mind and until he can see it realized on the monitor we would do the takes over and over. He’s really tough on himself and others in order to get just the right shot. He has this idea in his head and he doesn’t let it go until he gets it. You know those type of people! He’s just really good, good, good.

PREVUE: Your character’s eastern European. Tell us about your background.

DOBO: I was born in Budapest. My father was a soldier back when Hungary was a communist country. I was raised in that era. I lived for two years in Kiev, when the army sent my father there. I speak Russian fluently.

PREVUE: Did you always want to be an actress?

DOBO: I was thinking about being a nurse, or perhaps a TV host. Being an actress never crossed my mind.

PREVUE: How did you career begin?

DOBO: I was modeling after I finished high school. It was really good money back then. It was in Hungary in 1993. I didn’t feel that I was beautiful, and my boyfriend at that time just wanted to give me the courage to believe in myself, so he sent an application to a magazine for a modeling competition. They picked me up and I actually won first place. Then, I was in the Look of the Year for the following year.

PREVUE: What brought you into the acting world?

DOBO: Two years later, a photographer called me up for an audition. I took my book with all my pictures and when I arrived I realized it wasn’t a photo shoot. It was an audition for a teen TV series. I thought, “I’ll go home, they’ve made a mistake.” But, they encouraged me to try since I was already there and I read for it. They offered me one of the main roles. They sent me to this incredibly nice acting teacher who became my second mom. She taught me the most important things about acting, and encouraged me to attend the Hungarian School of Dramatic Arts. There is only one school in Hungary where you can study acting and every year 1,000 people try to get in and they select 11. We argued about it for two years. I told her that there was no chance that I would make it, but she encouraged me to try. I got into the school and that same year I landed the lead role in a Hungarian film.

PREVUE: That was András Kern’s comedy Out of Order?

DOBO: Yes, and it was a really big hit in Hungary. The next year I did two other films, and I thought that if I really wanted to do films I had to go to Hollywood. I didn’t really speak English, so it felt like a brave thing to do.

PREVUE: What was the first thing you did when you got to Hollywood?

DOBO: I began working with a speech coach three times a week. It was so tiring, but it was worth it.

PREVUE: What was your first break?

DOBO: That was in 15 Minutes, which starred Robert De Niro. They were looking for an eastern European girl for one of the main roles, but my English wasn’t strong enough yet. They were really nice to give me a small part. I also had a few lines in the independent film American Rhapsody.

PREVUE: Do you study acting now that you are in Hollywood?

DOBO: I’m in The Aaron Speiser Acting Workshop. It’s where Jennifer Lopez and LL Cool J study.

PREVUE: Is there an actress that you particularly admire?

DOBO: My idol is Cate Blanchett, she is amazing. I would love to go for the same kind of challenging roles. I have this philosophy that being “good enough” won’t do it. You have to strive to be the best!

PREVUE: You look like you could get a date with any star in Hollywood, so we have to ask – are you single?

DOBO: [with a shy smile] Yes, but I’ve been in a relationship for two years.

PREVUE: With your looks? That’s not going to stop some people from trying. Anyway, what are your interests off the set?

DOBO: I like painting, although I don’t really have time for that now. I had more time for that back in Hungary.

PREVUE: What do you have time for?

DOBO: Books. Lots of books. It’s a great way for me to expand my English. I love Milan Kundera, who wrote The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and Prague. I read all his books in Hungarian and now I’m reading them in English. He can catch real characters and because of his origins, he writes about the same conditions I grew up under in Hungary. He’s Czech, and the Czech Republic was also under the Russian’s influence. I understand the people’s feelings and what he is writing about.

PREVUE: What is it like being in the lavish world of Hollywood after growing up under Communism?

DOBO: I feel blessed that I have had these two experiences and can compare them. It gives me a different perspective on life.

PREVUE: What is your favorite memory of Budapest?

DOBO: Budapest is so beautiful! I lived by the Danube, the river that separates Buda and Pest. In the morning, the sun rises and hits the castle and the parliament building. It’s the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life.

PREVUE: Is there a role you would love to play?

DOBO: I love small independent films, and roles in films like that bring so much richness to one’s acting. [her eyes flash] But, I would love to be one of the girls in a Bond film. [purring] I would love to be a bond girl, it would be so much fun!
